How to Prepare to Install a Septic Tank
If you are getting ready for a septic tank installation, there are some important steps that you need to take as the homeowner to ensure that the process goes smoothly and according to plan.
Remove the old septic tank.
The first step of installing a new septic tank is to remove the old one. Make sure that you schedule with your plumber to ensure you have sufficient time to troubleshoot any possible setbacks.
Get a percolation test.
These are done before the installation to measure how well the existing soil filters wastewater from your system. In addition, it ensures that the system can be supported by the soil. You may have to adjust the soil before the installation can begin, so again, make sure you schedule this well in advance with your plumber.
Make sure you have drinking water.
During an installation, your water will be off during the entire process. This means you will need to have sufficient drinking water for you and your family for the duration. So make sure to stock up on water beforehand!
Decide how you will shower and use the bathroom.
Your plumber could recommend that you hire a portable bathroom for the workers and your family. However, you still need to plan where you will shower. This means you may have to either use a friend’s/neighbor’s house or, as a last resort, book a hotel.
Inform your neighbors.
This is a big project that could be disruptive to your neighbors, so make sure that you let them know what you are planning. We are sure they will appreciate the heads-up!
